Terrence M. Franklin, J.D., Partner, Sacks Glazier Franklin & Lodise
The 1846 Will of John Sutton. Mr. Franklin went looking for evidence that would answer the question whether there was love in the relationship between his great-great-great-great grandfather, John, a white slaveholder in the Antebellum South, and his great-great-great-great grandmother, Lucy, who was John’s ‘mulatto slave’ and the mother of John’s children and grandchildren. The 1846 will Mr. Franklin found helped answer that question, but his search also revealed a fascinating discovery, perfect for a trust and estate litigator.
IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE LUNCH
Michael H. Zaidlin, J.D., AIF, Madrone Investment Advisory, LLC
The Intersection of Retirement and Estate Planning: Optimal Decisions with Social Security and Retirement Accounts. Mr. Zaidlin will discuss the intricacies of Social Security claiming rules for married, divorced, and surviving spouses as well as those who are single; the role of Social Security as longevity insurance, particularly with the survivor step-up; and how benefits are impacted by non-covered pensions such as CalSTRS pensions. In addition, Mr. Zaidlin will also discuss financial and tax issues impacting the choice of retirement account beneficiaries.
Kathryn L. Tucker, J.D., Executive Director of
The End Of Life Liberty Project
Lonny Shavelson, M.D., Founder and Head of the Clinic
“Bay Area End of Life Options” (www.BayAreaEndOfLifeOptions.com)
Evolving Law, Medicine and Policy Governing End of Life Care, with Special Focus on California. California’s End of Life Options Act (EOLA) became effective in June 2016. It provides statutory permission for aid in dying.
